Position Overview:
Main Street Madison, AL, a newly designated Main Street Alabama community, is seeking a visionary, community-driven Executive Director to lead downtown revitalization efforts. This individual will serve as the face of the organization and be responsible for developing and executing strategies that align with the Main Street Four-Point Approach®: Design, Economic Vitality, Promotion, and Organization. The Executive Director will foster partnerships among public and private sectors, small businesses, local government, and residents to enhance the vibrancy, economic health, and historic character of Madison’s Main Street district.
Key Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership & Management:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of Main Street Madison, including budgeting, fundraising, strategic planning, and staff/volunteer coordination.
- Manage administrative functions including grant applications, reports, and compliance with Main Street Alabama and National Main Street Center requirements.
- Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to set and achieve organizational goals.
Community Engagement & Public Relations:
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the Main Street district.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including local businesses, city departments, property owners, residents, and nonprofit partners.
- Develop marketing, outreach, and promotional campaigns to elevate the district’s visibility and community participation.
· Economic Development:
- Support and recruit small businesses to enhance economic vitality in the Main Street district.
- Maintain data on property and business inventory, economic activity, and investment impact.
- Assist property owners with building improvements and adaptive reuse of historic structures.
· Design & Historic Preservation:
- Promote quality design that reflects Madison’s character while enhancing physical assets.
- Collaborate on streetscape improvements, public art, signage, and beautification projects.
- Advocate for preservation of historic buildings and adaptive reuse opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business, Marketing, Planning, Historic Preservation, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in nonprofit management, economic development, urban planning, or a related area.
- Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
- Passion for historic preservation, small business development, and community building.
- Ability to work independently and with diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with the Main Street Four-Point Approach® and/or downtown revitalization programs preferred.
